Back on Track

Hi guys, I have been sick so I haven't been running lately. Wednesday will be the first time in 10 days since I've had a run. Right now I'm trying to get back into shape for my church's Thanksgiving Olympics. I have no idea what will be happening that day, but just in case I have to do the human wheelbarrow for a mile, I wanna be ready.

Anyway, I'd like to report that I have NO idea where I stand on my beginning of the year goal of a sub-8 minute mile. But running for longer periods is much easier to do now than before.

Yay!

Has anyone read up on the new Nike + iPod deal? I read that there's a chip that you can plug into a special Nike shoe that'll monitor your running and give you encouraging statements.

Oh yeah, I read up on that too, but you also need to buy the nike shoe.

It gives you encouraging statements? Hahaha...

Do you remember that creepy-looking, plush doll on "American Inventor" that gives out encouragements? You'd put one of its arm across your back and then push a button, and it would say something like, "You're a very important person."

Nike beware, you're about to be sued.

Oh, here's some practical advice on speeding up your distance runs. You want to do some called "interval training". There are two types of intervals, high intensity and low intensity. What you want to do is to run an interval, say 400m, at a fast pace, pushing yourself as hard as you can. Then for your next interval, do a light jog (no walking). Then go back to a high intensity interval.

Find some intervals that fits you. 200m might be a good start. You might even want to try doing a high intensity 200m run, and then a low intensity 400m recovery, or until your breathing is comfortable (don't get too comfortable, 'cuz you won't want to run anymore). Do, maybe, 4 sets to start. You should be pretty tired by the end, because high intensity runs are, uhhh, intense.

Don't forget to warm up and stretch, so your muscles won't be tight.

Don't forget to cool down and stretch to help with recovery. And consume some anti-oxidants to fight off free radicals.
